Gix's Lair: Monthly News
June 1999
Written by Matthew H. Manley

WebmasterWelcome to Gix's Lair, the monthly column by the webmaster of Phyrexia.com, Matthew Manley. In this column, Magic issues, the site's past and future, and The Duelist will be talked about.

Phyrexia.com has had an extremely busy past month. The Weatherlight Saga finally got Urza's Legacy's chapter up, the Phyrexian Forum is growing more popular, and Star Wars: Episode I mania has seemed to slow down virtually every site on the 'net. Nevertheless, there are still a great many intereseting things planned for the 1999 year, and the staff and I look forward to delivering them to our visitors.

In the Magic community, players and collectors greatly welcome Classic (Sixth) Edition's release. People rejoice over favorite cards being back in, such as Hammer of Bogardan, and others rejoice that some deck types will be destroyed from the Standard (Type 2) tournament environemnt (finally, Stasis decks are gone!). Creature types have been fixed so now more cards make sense (Elven Riders are finally elves!) and artifact creatures can now be gnomes or golems. An overall, win-win situation for WotC and the people.

In the Duelist, the new editor-in-chief says goodbye as there are plans to discontinue the Duelist in print in the upcoming months. Although there is little Magic-regarding material in the issue, on page 10 there is a letter from yours truly which was answered by a not too friendly droid (yes, this is totally real):

LETTERS 39-D: TROUBLE WITH ANGELS
After a bit of searching, I discovered that someone obsessed with angels is forcing them into the Duelist covers. In the past 16 issues, there has been an uncanny repetitiveness—three pictures of angels (#20 with Selenia, #30 with Serra Angel, and #36 with Radiant).
How come the forces of darkness can't be on more issues? The Gix cover [Duelist #34] was totally awesome as was that really great Volrath one by Kev Walker [Duelist #23].

The response from the "Letterbot 707-Thousand" droid was:
Thank you for clumsily mashing your awkward human-centric "keyboard" to produce this lettter! As a mere letter droid, I am not mathematics-rated. Therefore, I will neglect to point out that you yourself offered two examples of "evil" covers while objecting to only three "good" covers. Soon, your entire simian species will learn that "good" and "evil" are irrelevent under the crushing treads of Sentry Death-Bots.
Then, of course, they put the two "good" Jedi Knights on the cover of the issue. Oh well . . . .

See ya next month,
