Overlooked Cards
High Tide

(Common - Fallen Empires, U, Until end of turn, all islands produce an additional U when tapped for mana.)

It's safe to say that almost every Fallen Empires card is overlooked. It is understandable, yet a shame that the set is so unpopular. There are many very useful cards in it. Among those cards is High Tide—I like the Anson Maddocks illustration of this card the best.

Many of the really good power blue cards, and especially the big creatures, are very mana intensive. I love the speed that High Tide gives my blue decks. I have used High Tide to get out fifth turn Leviathans, and once, in conjunction with some mana-producing artifacts, I got a Benthic Behemoth out on the third turn.

Perhaps a little more pragmatically, I have used the High Tide to cast spells during my turn and save enough untapped islands to use effectively during my opponent's turn. It's very useful when you are taking a pounding from a speed creature deck to be able to tap for enough mana to cast a couple of creatures yourself and still leave those ever-needed two islands untapped for a Counterspell.

I have used High Tide before casting Braingeyser to draw that many more cards, or to deck an opponent. Really, any spell with "X" as part of the casting cost can be more useful if used with a High Tide. If you are playing a black and blue deck, try using Howl from Beyond after casting a High Tide, or, if you are playing a red and blue deck, try a Fireball or any direct damage "X" spell. In a game where speed is everything, any card that generates a lot of mana rapidly is useful.

Ulrich really hates it when I cast a High Tide to play a Braingeyser and then Relearn the Braingeyser and cast it again. Another combo that I haven't yet had the opportunity to try is using the High Tide to cast a Polar Kraken, then Relearn the High Tide and use it the next turn to cast a Leviathan. Doesn't that sound like grand fun?
