Illusions of Grandeur
Written by Ulrich and Helva

As a player who uses a lot of blue and white, I often find myself desperate to do that one last point of damage that will finish off my opponent. Many people laugh at Touch of Death, but that card has been the difference between winning and losing in my blue, white and black deck. Frequently I lose a game by one turn with my opponent at 1 life.

That stopped when I got my first Illusions of Grandeur. For one blue, three colorless and a cumulative upkeep of two colorless, Illusions of Grandeur adds 20 to your life total as long as it remains in play. Since white and blue are the slowest colors in Magic, the Illusions gives you the time to set up your defenses without having to worry about fast red, green or black decks finishing you off. I like to use it to buy time to cast a swarm of Serras and Archangels, then watch my opponent cringe.

Illusions of Grandeur can also buy time for Stasis, Millstone, or Orb decks which tend to win if they can last more than three or four turns and depend heavily on getting combos in place. You can use Enlightened Tutor to get the Illusions out as quickly as you need it, and you can add Skull of Orm to get it back to your hand, or just include multiple copies.
