Overlooked Cards
Ulrich's Mean Combos
Written by Ulrich and Helva

Usually Helva tells you all about the interesting cards which she uses to beat my decks and cause me to shake my head in disbelief. Usually those cards are blue or white since those are the colors Helva plays most frequently. This month I thought I'd share some combinations for those of us who favor black, red or green, especially those of you who like to do things a bit differently.

For example, Storm Cauldron and Firestorm. Storm Cauldron is an Alliances artifact which takes 5 to cast. It allows all players to put an extra land into play each turn, but any land which is tapped returns to its owner's hand. If you play a quick Red deck, maybe a Goblin or Orc deck, you only really need two or three land. So what do you do when all that land starts coming back to your hand? Firestorm is a Weatherlight instant which only costs one red. It does X damage to each of X target creatures and/or players, where X is the number of cards you discard. Why not cast a big fireball, then polish your opponent off by discarding a bunch of land? Even if they are able to prevent the damage to themselves, you can usually kill all their key creatures, too, leaving them defenseless. Then send in your hordes for the final blow. Most decks won't be able to take a three-pronged attack like this.

Another fun combo is using Aspect of Wolf with either Psionic Entity (4th Edition) or Tracker (The Dark). Aspect of Wolf is an enchantment which costs one green and one generic mana to cast. It boosts the power and toughness of the enchanted creature based on the number of forests you have in play. Tracker costs 2G to cast. He's a 2/2 creature with a special ability that costs two green to activate: he does an amount of damage equal to his power to a target creature. The downside is that the target creature does damage equal to its power to Tracker. Slap the Aspect of Wolf on the Tracker and he can kill much bigger creatures without dying himself!

The Psionic Entity is the same concept. It takes 4U to cast and he's a 2/2 creature. By tapping it, it does 2 damage to target creature or player and 3 damage to itself. With the Aspect of Wolf, this becomes two points of free damage each turn (once you have more than two forests in play)! Psionic Entity can do damage to players, too, so he's even more useful than Tracker.

There are also some overlooked ways to boost those weenie hordes if they start to get overcome. Feast of the Unicorn is a bit expensive for a local enchantment at 3B, but it gives the enchanted creature +4/+0. Put that on a creature with first strike and you've got a formidable threat. Soul Kiss is another creature enchantment. It costs 2B but for every black mana and life you pay, the enchanted creature gets +2/+2. If the creature is unblocked, you can trade one life for two points of damage to your opponent. You can only use this ability up to three times per turn, but if you are doing six points of damage and only taking three, there won't be many turns left!

Keep some of these cards in mind as you open your Exodus packs. I'm sure we'll find even more mean combo's!
